Buyer's Guide

How to choose the
best diamond drill bit

What is the Purpose Of A Diamond Drill Bit?

Diamond drills are tools designed specifically for drilling holes into hard materials. There are many different types of diamond bits available depending upon the type of material being drilled. For example, there are carbide bits which cut softer metals such as aluminum and brass; ceramic bits which cut harder ceramics such as porcelain and glass; tungsten carbide bits which cut steel; and titanium carbide bits which cut stainless steel. Each kind has its own advantages and disadvantages.

Types of Bits Available

The most common type of diamond drill bit is called a twist bit. Twist bits consist of two parts - a shank (the part that screws into the chuck) and a cutting head. The cutting head contains diamonds set in rows around the circumference of the tip. As the drill rotates, the diamonds chip away at the metal creating small chips which fall into the hole created by the drill. Twist bits are generally considered to be the best choice for drilling holes in non-ferrous metals because they create very little heat during operation. However, they require frequent sharpening due to the fact that the tips wear quickly.

Advantages of Using a Twist Bit

Twist bits are inexpensive compared to other kinds of bits. Because they produce minimal heat, they are safe to operate near flammable liquids and gases. In addition, they are easy to sharpen since the entire bit needs only to be rotated 90 degrees to remove the worn portion of the tip. Finally, twist bits are relatively quiet while operating.

Disadvantages of using a Twist Bit

Because twist bits are cheap, they are prone to breakage. To avoid breaking, always tighten the chuck firmly onto the shaft of the bit. Another disadvantage of twist bits is that they cannot be used to bore holes larger than 1/4 inch diameter. Some manufacturers recommend using a smaller size bit for boring holes greater than 1/2 inch diameter.

Other Types of Bits Available

There are several other types of bits available including center punch bits, end mill bits, reamer bits, and countersink bits. Center punch bits are used primarily for punching holes in sheet metal. End mill bits are used for making long straight cuts in solid materials. Reaming bits are used for enlarging existing holes. Countersinking bits are used for removing excess material from inside a hole. All these bits are typically attached to a rotating tool holder rather than a hand held unit.

Diamond drills bits are essential tools for anyone who wants to perform drilling operations. There are many different types of diamonds available today, each offering its own unique benefits. However, there are two main categories of diamond drills bits which include carbide and ceramic-based products. Carbide based drills bits are generally considered superior due to their durability and longevity. Ceramic based drills bits are typically cheaper options, however, these bits lack the strength and hardness necessary to withstand heavy duty applications.

Carbide Based Drills Bits

Carbide based drills bits are manufactured using high grade materials including tungsten carbides, cobalt chromium steel, nickel chrome steel, and stainless steel. Each material offers its own set of advantages and disadvantages. For example, tungsten carbide has excellent wear resistance and corrosion resistance while being relatively inexpensive. Cobalt chromium steel is strong enough to handle most industrial applications yet is fairly cheap. Stainless steel is durable and long lasting, making it ideal for professional users. Nickel chrome steel is very hard and resistant to heat, meaning it can be used for both light duty and heavy duty applications.

Ceramic Based Drills Bits

Ceramic based drills bits are commonly referred to as "carbide free" because they contain no carbon whatsoever. Instead, they consist entirely of silicon nitride (SiN) ceramics. SiN ceramics are extremely tough and highly resistant to extreme temperatures. As a result, they are able to endure higher operating temperatures than traditional carbide based drills bits. In addition, SiN ceramics are significantly lighter than carbide based drills bits, making them easier to maneuver during operation. Unfortunately, SiN ceramics are also quite brittle and prone to cracking. Therefore, they require special handling techniques to ensure proper safety precautions are taken throughout the manufacturing process.

There are several factors which determine whether you should opt for a carbide or ceramic based drill bit. First, you must decide between a single point or multi-point drill bit. Single point drill bits are designed to cut only one hole per rotation. Multi-point drill bits allow multiple holes to be drilled simultaneously. Second, you must select either a straight edge or round nose style drill bit. Straight edge drill bits are best suited for cutting flat surfaces whereas round nose drill bits are preferred for creating curved edges. Third, you must decide between a manual or electric powered drill.

Diamond drills bits are essential tools for anyone who wants to get into DIY projects. However, there are many different types of diamonds available today. So which type of drill bit should you be using? Here are five features to look for when choosing a diamond drill bit.

1) Size Matters

The size of the hole created by the drill bit determines whether it is suitable for certain applications. Smaller holes are ideal for drilling small screws while larger holes are best suited for large bolts. Most drill bits are designed to create holes between 1mm and 2mm wide.

2) Material Matters

There are two main materials used to manufacture drill bits - carbide and tungsten carbide (WC). Carbide drill bits are generally cheaper and easier to sharpen, however WC drill bits last longer and cut faster. Tungsten carbide drill bits are typically harder and stronger than carbide ones. But they are also heavier and require specialised equipment to sharpen.

3) Shape Matters

Drill bits come in several different shapes including triangular, square, hexagonal, octagonal, and round. Each shape has its own advantages depending on the application. Triangular shaped drill bits are most commonly used for cutting sheet metal because they allow for greater control during drilling. Hexagonal shaped drill bits are good for creating straight lines and circles. Round bits are useful for making holes in hardwood floors and walls.

4) Finish Matters

Some drill bits are coated with a protective layer called "hard coat" to increase durability. Others are left uncoated to reduce weight and improve performance. Hard coats are applied either manually or automatically using machines. Some manufacturers claim that hard coats give drill bits extra strength and longevity. Other companies say that these layers actually weaken the drill bits.

5) Price Matters

Price isn't always indicative of quality. In fact, cheap drill bits aren't necessarily inferior to pricier models. There are plenty of inexpensive drill bits on the market that perform very well. However, you shouldn't pay too little attention to price tags. Cheap drill bits are likely to break sooner than higher priced models. Always check reviews online to see what others think of particular brands.

Diamond Drills

There are many different kinds of drills available today. Some are designed specifically for drilling holes while others are meant for general-purpose applications. There are two main categories of drills - rotary and percussion. Rotary drills rotate around the axis of rotation whereas percussion drills strike the material being drilled using hammers or striking tools attached to the end of the tool. Both these methods produce sparks which cause wear and tear on the cutting edges of the bits. Hence, there is always a risk of dulling the tips of the bits.
